I recently wanted to know my golf swing speed. Naively I thought it would be an easy task. Surely there’s an app for that? Sadly not. Currently, the only reliable way to quickly work out your golf swing speed is to use some form of device to measure your swing speed.
In an ideal world, if money were no object then a Trackman, or GC Quad would be the perfect tools (usually in the region of £20k). I’ve left those two products out of this list since they fall under launch monitors that we’ll look at in a separate article. In this list I’m looking to focus on the best affordable ways to measure a golfer’s swing speed.
Some of these monitors are able to measure swing speed without physically hitting a ball. Measuring swing speed without the ball, is perfect for back garden or indoor swing speed training where a golfer might not have the room to actually launch a ball or when a golfer is specifically speed training.
So how do we do it? Well there’s quite a few ways depending on a golfer’s budget.
With a more sensible budget, I bought this radar that was recommended to me for less than £80. It was described to me as “not the most accurate”, but to be honest, for the price I think it does the job that I needed it to do.

The tech side of golf and golf training, is changing on an almost daily basis. As it stands, there isn’t an obvious best product for all golfers, it totally depends on what information a golfer needs to know. Some of the cheaper speed measuring devices will give golfers enough information for their particular needs, but generally the more you spend the better these devices get.
