St Andrews Old Course

Old Course - St Andrews

There are seven different golf courses at St Andrews including the oldest and most famous one, The Old Course.

The Old Course at St Andrews is not only the most famous course in Scotland, but also in the whole world. The history of the Old Course dates back to the early 15th century which is why the course is commonly referred to as “The Home of Golf”.

In 1552, Archbishop Hamilton of Scotland granted permission for a golf course to be built on the undulating, sandy, grass covered ground of St Andrews. This was the beginning of what would become the Old Course. Over the centuries, the course has evolved and expanded, with many changes made to the layout and design.

In the early 19th century, the course was laid out in its current configuration, with 18 holes. This was largely the work of Old Tom Morris, who was greenkeeper at St Andrews from 1865 to 1903. Morris was responsible for many of the iconic features of the Old Course, including “Hell Bunker” on the 14th hole and the famous Swilcan Bridge on the 18th hole.

The Old Course has been the site of many important events in golf history. The first Open Championship was held there in 1873, and it has since hosted the tournament more times than any other golf course. The Old Course has also hosted the Walker Cup, the Ryder Cup, and the Dunhill Links Championship.

Today, the Old Course remains one of the most popular golf courses in the world, with golfers from around the globe coming to St Andrews. It retains much of its historic charm and character, and continues to be an important part of the history and tradition of golf.
