Brief synopsis:

This book was a game changer for me.

Atomic Habits is not a book written specifically for golfers, but it is 100% relevant to all golfers. The book gives readers simple methods to help instil new habits and to break bad habits. Habits are huge in golf. This book can help golfers to change habits, such as adopting a new pre-shot routine, changing the way they react to bad shots, or changing their grip.

Atomic Habits is a groundbreaking book that will revolutionise the way the a golfer approaches personal growth. James Clear’s profound insights, backed by scientific research, offer a refreshing take on habit formation and demonstrates the remarkable power of small changes. Whether you aspire to enhance your productivity, improve your relationships, or adopt healthier lifestyle choices, Atomic Habits provides the roadmap to success.

Atomic Habits – Detailed Book Review

For golfers striving to improve their game and unlock their full potential, Atomic Habits by James Clear is an invaluable resource. This book transcends the boundaries of traditional self-help literature, providing golfers with actionable strategies to optimise their habits and achieve remarkable progress on the golf course.

I read this book at a time that I was implementing a significant change in my golf swing. In order to make that change, I needed to force myself to use a new “trigger”. The methods that Clear describes in this book helped me to easily instil this new swing thought by using the 4 laws of behaviour change.

Atomic Habits creates a framework for effective behaviour change by using Clear’s 4 laws to help create new good habits, and break bad habits. Each law has a positive message to help instil a new habit, and then an opposite message to help rid bad habits.

By focusing on small changes, Clear’s concepts align perfectly with golfers that are on a journey of improvement. Small, manageable changes help a golfer to enhance their technique and mindset, and to banish poor techniques and poor swing thoughts.

Consistency and discipline are paramount in golf. When a golfer understands the science behind habit formation, they can develop resilience, embrace challenges, and maintain a positive attitude, allowing them to consistently improve their skills.

Golf is Mental

Golf is as much a mental game as it is a physical one. Atomic Habits equips golfers with the tools to strengthen their mental resilience and enhance their performance under pressure. Clear’s insights on habit stacking, environment design, and identity-based habits, offer golfers innovative ways to cultivate a winning mindset. By optimising their habits and creating a supportive environment, golfers can effectively manage stress, overcome mental obstacles, and maintain focus throughout their rounds.

Atomic Habits – My Favourite Quote

It’s not a quote as such, but more a small section within the Atomic Habits book. Clear refer’s to this section as “The Two Minute Rule”. In brief, this rule is about making any new habit simple. He describes how to scale habits down to make them achievable. Any habit can be broken down into a two minute version:

“Read before bed each night” becomes “Read one page.”

“Do thirty minutes of yoga” becomes “Take out my yoga mat.”

“Study for class” becomes “Open my notes.”

“Fold the laundry” becomes “Fold one pair of socks”

“Run three miles” becomes “Tie my running shoes”

The idea is to make your habit as easy as possible to start.
