Golf Is Hard – Detailed Book Review
“Golf Is Hard” by Andrew “Beef” Johnston is a refreshingly honest and engaging memoir that captures the essence of what it means to pursue a professional career in golf. From the first page, Johnston’s genuine and down-to-earth personality shines through, making the reader feel as if they are having a candid conversation with an old friend.
Johnston, affectionately known as “Beef” in the golfing world, takes readers on a journey from his early days growing up in North London to his rise in the ranks of professional golf on the Challenge Tour, European tour and PGA Tour. His storytelling is infused with humour and humility, making it clear that he is just as comfortable laughing at himself as he is sharing his more serious moments.
There’s a fascinating insight into the whole “Beeeeeeeeef” name, when it started and how he and fellow golfers feel about it being boomed around the golf course from the first tee shot to the final putt.
Mental Health
One of the standout aspects of this book is Johnston’s willingness to delve into the mental and emotional challenges he has faced. He provides an unvarnished look at the pressures of professional sports, discussing his struggles with anxiety and the toll it can take on an athlete’s mental health. This candidness is both refreshing and inspiring, offering a reminder that even those who seem to have it all figured out are still human. Johnston honestly talks through being in a really dark place and then dealing with his mental health struggles. He sought out help from family, friends and renowned sports psychologist Steve Peters.
Johnston also shares the highs of his career, from his memorable maiden DP World Tour title at Valderrama in the 2016 Open de Espana (Spanish Open), to the joy he finds in connecting with fans. His love for the game is evident on every page, and his anecdotes from the tour are both entertaining and enlightening. Whether he’s recounting a humorous incident in the locker room, his 18th Birthday celebrations at North Mid, or reflecting on the lessons he’s learned from his peers, Johnston’s passion for golf is palpable.
Johnston also shares his thoughts on some of golf’s biggest names, Rory Mcilroy, Tiger Woods, Scottie Scheffler, Patrick Cantlay and Ricky Fowler. He also shares his stories about his love for wife Jodie, his huge desire to play in the Ryder Cup, love of Arsenal, and his struggles after starting to win “a load of money”.
LIV Golf
Surprisingly rarely mentions the topic of LIV golf until the very end of the book … which to me would suggest he’s still open to an approach when he gets back on track after his injury break over the last couple of years due to a major thumb injury … 🎣
Okay, so maybe that’s me fishing a little but with a good season, Beef could well be on his way to his Ryder Cup dream. This would be an incredible achievement after such a long break from competitive action. I do think that his attitude and demeanour could be an ideal fit for the hustle and bustle of team golf.
The book is well-paced, with a good balance of personal stories and insights into the professional golf world. Johnston’s writing style is accessible and engaging, making “Golf Is Hard” a page-turner for both avid golfers and those new to the sport. His ability to convey the complexities of golf in a relatable manner ensures that readers will come away with a deeper appreciation for the game.
I read the first version and the only criticism I would have is that it needs another good proofread and edit. There are a few typos, repetition within a paragraph, and the flow of some of the stories needs reviewing. If you’re pedantic about things like this then maybe it’s not the book for you.
Why Should Golfers Read Golf Is Hard?
In short, this book reminds golfers that golf is hard! The book shares an authentic insight into professional golf with relatable and inspirational stories. It’s humorous and engaging while sharing important messages about mental health.
